The Labor Chamber’s chief economist, Markus Marterbauer, is convinced that we are being held back by a policy of scare tactics. That is why “a policy that gives hope” is needed.
The hard facts: 75,000 people in Vorarlberg are at risk of poverty – 18,000 of them are children. The number of those affected has been steadily increasing for almost ten years. The current price increase is putting even more Vorarlbergers in financial trouble. People who barely have money for rent, heating, let alone leisure activities or holidays, are at risk of poverty and exclusion.
According to the so-called “EU-SILC” standard, a person in Austria is at risk of poverty if he has less than EUR 1371 per month to live on – for a family with two children it is EUR 2879.1. But no one should have to live in such precarious financial circumstances. “Unless the politicians want it,” said AK chief economist Marterbauer at the presentation of his new book “Angst und Angstmacherei. For an economic policy that gives hope” last week in the Vorarlberg Labor Chamber in Feldkirch.
