Hardly any impact – airports: security personnel demand more salary

Date:

Not only the railway workers are currently negotiating their wages. Security staff at Austrian airports are also demanding higher salaries and holding work meetings on Tuesdays and Fridays. In Vienna, at least, this should hardly affect travelers.

“We are currently in constructive consultation with the employee representatives. The working meeting at VIAS (Vienna International Airport Security Services, please note) scheduled for November 22 will only last about an hour, we do not expect any impact on travelers,” Vienna Airport representatives said. In Vienna, Innsbruck and Graz, the security guards would be informed on Tuesday, in Salzburg on Friday morning.

German security personnel get more money
The background to the meeting is that the union is demanding significantly higher wages for security personnel. The German level should be about 50 to 70 percent above the Austrian level next year, provided allowances and special benefits are taken into account. According to the union, Austria should address this.

According to the VIAS collective labor agreement, young professionals in Vienna currently receive 9.94 euros gross per hour, or 1722 euros gross for 40 hours per week. After 16 years of service, it is then 11.40 euros gross per hour. Vienna Airport counters that employees have an average hourly wage of 13.45 euros, taking allowances and allowances into account. In addition, since June there has been an annual profit sharing of 500 euros per employee. In addition, a higher salary was decided from January.

Different contracts
A different collective agreement applies at the federal airports, in particular that for the security sector. Here, 11.52 euros gross per hour is paid regardless of seniority. “Even at the airports in the federal states, wages should go towards Germany, so towards 3,000 euros gross per month,” negotiator Gernot Knopp demands in a broadcast. KV’s second round of negotiations ended last week without result.

In addition to the wages, the union also criticizes the high workload of the staff. Although air traffic has increased sharply again, VIAS employs fewer people than before the corona pandemic. Then there were 1300, now there are 950.
