Amazon maintains its growth plan in Spain and will hire 2,000 people this year

The company acknowledges that most tech companies are “adjusting” their workforce, but hopes to reach 20,000 employees by 2022 and 25,000 by 2025.

A few days ago, international media published that Amazon would lay off 10,000 employees, about 1% of the global workforce. The multinational neither confirms nor denies the information, but today they confirmed that in Spain they will “maintain their growth plan” and will hire about 2,000 people before the end of the year, which will bring the total number of employees in our country to 20,000. .

In a press conference in which the company’s Human Resources managers assured that they want to be “the best employer in the world”, they emphasized that the number of employees in Spain has increased from just over 7,000 in 2019 to the current 18,000 due to the boom that the company experienced during the pandemic. The growth plan envisions adding another 2,000 this year and reaching 25,000 people by 2025.

Víctor Romía, director of Amazon Customer Fulfillment in Spain, acknowledged that since the end of the quarantine there has been a “change in consumption habits” of his customers, who are now investing more in travel or leisure plans away from home. In this sense, he pointed out that the company is “adapting” to these trends, but maintains its growth target.

Most of the jobs at Amazon Spain are in logistics and Romía explained that there will be growth in this section as well. Of the current 18,000 employees at the end of 2021, 14,500 were in the operational and logistics part, which is 80% of the total.

The survey ‘New labor trends in Spain’, drawn up together with Ipsos, shows that only 34% of employees are satisfied with their salary. In this sense, Alejandra Rodríguez del Castillo, Director of Labor Relations at Amazon, explained that the minimum entry-level salary in the company’s logistics centers in Madrid and Barcelona is EUR 1,750 gross per year, 43% higher than the minimum inter-professional salary (SMI). .
