The Volkswagen Group has stopped all paid activities on Twitter. All Volkswagen Group brands have suspended their advertising activities on the social media platform until further notice, according to a spokesman for the Wolfsburg-based carmaker.
At the beginning of the month, Volkswagen advised the VW, Audi, Seat, Cupra, Lamborghini, Bentley, Ducati and Porsche brands belonging to the group to refrain from paid advertising on Twitter until further notice, after Elon Musk took over the short message service .
All brands followed the advice, said the spokesperson. Audi even decided to stop all activities on Twitter, such as direct posts. The “Wirtschaftswoche” had previously reported on this. According to the magazine, no tweets have been posted to the company’s account since Nov. 2. Before that, Audi tweeted almost daily.
Many advertisers keep their distance
Other companies such as Opel parent Stellantis or airline United Airlines also distance themselves from the short message service. With his erratic decisions on Twitter, new owner Musk, who also runs electric car maker Tesla, alienates employees and users alike.
Advertisers are also angry at the self-proclaimed “freedom of speech absolutist”‘s plan to relax content moderation rules on Twitter. Critics warn that this could make the platform a hotbed for hate speech and conspiracy theories.
