After the 24-hour warning strike by the railway workers, ÖBB resumed passenger and freight traffic on Tuesday. However, there may still be restrictions, delays or cancellations from time to time. But there could be another strike this week in another industry: this time, retail would be hit for two days.
Failed negotiations within the framework of the current collective bargaining between the railway workers and the employers triggered the warning strike at the beginning of the week, which paralyzed Austrian rail traffic all day.
Strike across Austria
According to ÖBB, around 8,000 passenger and freight trains from various carriers are on the road in Austria every day. About one million passengers are transported every day. However, the strike continued on Monday, as chief employer negotiator Gerhard Tauchner could see with his own eyes at the Matzleinsdorfer Platz location in Vienna. But the strike was also carried out in the other states – to the chagrin of commuters and motorists.
Although there was no major chaos, there was more traffic and congestion, especially in the agglomerations in the morning and evening. The situation was exacerbated in the morning in Graz, Innsbruck and Linz, when activists of the last generation started a sticking campaign. However, the police quickly arrived on the scene.
Trade before strike?
The brewers also went on a three-hour warning strike on Monday. The next round of trade negotiations is scheduled for Tuesday. The union had already received strike approval from the ÖGB, the union said in a broadcast. If no agreement is reached, a work stoppage is imminent next Friday and Saturday.
