Energy costs for the 230 Viennese vegetable, flower and ornamental plant growers have skyrocketed by as much as 180 percent – ​​a threefold increase – as a result of the war in Ukraine. At the same time, prices for fertilizers, plant protection products and other consumables have risen sharply.

“Our affiliated companies, which provide the Viennese population with valuable greenery in every way all year round, are beginning to fear for their very existence. Because the price increases can hardly be absorbed’, the chairman of the agricultural chamber, Franz Windisch, appealed.

As a first aid measure, he calls on the government to suspend specific energy taxes for natural gas and electricity and CO2 pricing until June 30, 2023. Furthermore, Windisch is demanding a special subsidy for horticultural companies, modeled on the French resilience plan.

In the long term, everything must also be done to quickly become independent from fossil sources: “For this we need a special investment program for deep geothermal energy and local heat networks.”
