The European Commission wants online groups to share in the infrastructure costs of the telecom industry. The Brussels government apparently wants to come up with a concrete proposal next year for a “data toll” for the expansion of fiber optic and mobile 5G networks.
The German Handelsblatt reports this on Monday with reference to circles from the business community and the government. Specifically, the report names streaming service providers such as Netflix and YouTube, who should be asked to pay. The legislative process could therefore start before Christmas with a “public consultation”.
A spokeswoman for the committee confirmed the project in principle. “The specific details and the exact timetable” would still be discussed. There was already applause from the telecommunications industry. “We are very optimistic,” says Alessandro Gropelli of the paper’s trade association Etno.
