The traditional Japanese electronics group Sony does not want to make humanoid robots until possible applications are clear. There are several companies like Sony that have the technology to create humanoid robots once there’s a promising use, Sony chief technology officer Hiroaki Kitano said.
Sony has a lot of experience in robotics, but is still waiting for specific application scenarios and more mature software. Kitano: “The key lies in application development.”
Sony released a robot dog named Aibo more than two decades ago. The company sold about 150,000 copies from 1999 to 2006 and released an enhanced version in 2018, which sold about 20,000 copies in its first six months.
Humanoid robots have been developed for decades by Honda and Hyundai. Tesla boss Elon Musk recently showed off a prototype of his humanoid robot Optimus.
