Supermarkets avoid applying the entire VAT reduction to prices

Facua denounces Carrefour, Alcampo, Dia, Aldi, Eroski, Lidl, Hipercor and Mercadona for not correctly influencing the government’s tax cut, even making some foods more expensive since the measure came into effect

The VAT reduction on basic foodstuffs that came into effect on January 1 is not being applied correctly in large stores, as Facua was able to determine after analyzing nearly 700 products in eight supermarkets. The consumer association will sue these eight chains at the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) for evading the government’s tax cut.

Of the 676 prices analyzed in Carrefour, Alcampo, Dia, Aldi, Eroski, Lidl, Hipercor and Mercadona, irregularities were found in 52 cases, 7.7% of the total. “It is impossible to control the entire market, but it is important to focus on the big chains that are more speculative with prices and making money since the price hikes started,” said Rubén Sánchez, Facua spokesman, at a press conference.

Although the price errors are not the same in all chains. The organization’s analysis indicates that where there is a higher rate of irregularities is DIA, where 17% of the products analyzed do not comply with the tax credit, followed by Carrefour, where the same happens with 10% of them. In the lower part of the table are Hipercor and Mercadona, chains where Facua found only one product out of 66 and 84 analyzed foods that did not comply with the regulations.
