Austria’s supposed number one national sport is crumbling. According to a new survey, only 25 percent of the population over the age of 16 put on the skis at least once a year.
According to a new OGM survey, the vast majority don’t ski at all anymore and don’t believe in the future of skiing. “The warm winter and the images of green terrain with white artificial snow tires certainly inhibit the skiing pleasure. Then there is the price increase,” says OGM boss Wolfgang Bachmayer.
Two out of three respondents attribute the lack of snow to climate change
Last but not least, the rapidly increasing value of climate and environmental protection also plays a role. According to the survey, 62 percent attribute the lack of snow to climate change, while 35 percent of those surveyed see it as normal weather. 59 percent do not believe that ski tourism has a future in Austria, 55 percent believe that the industry should develop other offers for winter tourism.
