World Food Chief – Why there is hope for everyone in the green desert

Date:

Martin Frick is director of the World Food Program for Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. Previously, he was the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to the 2021 Food Systems Summit and Executive Director of the Secretariat responsible for implementing the Paris Climate Agreement. In the “Krone” interview, he talks about his forecast for 2023, the global crop failures and why he puts hope in the desert.

“crown”: Dr. Frick, what is your prediction for 2023?
Martin Frick:
In December 2021, I said it was the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II. And we didn’t even know then that there would be war in Ukraine. The number of hungry people has tripled since 2019. We are now 349 million people who are acutely hungry and we have these people in 79 countries around the world. It’s a forest fire. In addition to the hunger crisis, we now also threaten with a production crisis. The price of fertilizer has increased by 184 percent. We already have the situation where many people around the world can no longer afford the basic groceries.
