A day strike started on Friday morning at Düsseldorf airport. About half of all flights were cancelled. The background is a redistribution of handling tasks, in which baggage and aircraft handler Avia was not given a chance. This puts 700 jobs at risk.
According to the Verdi trade union, the company refuses a social plan with severance payments for employees. Aviapartner has a market share of approximately 75 percent at Düsseldorf Airport. The German airport has the most passengers in North Rhine-Westphalia and is the third largest in the whole country.
The strike is expected to last until Saturday evening
The strike began at 3:30 a.m. and is expected to end at 12:30 p.m. Saturday night. About half of all flights have already been canceled before Friday, says a spokesperson for the Verdi trade union. The background to the work stoppages is that 700 jobs are at risk. The baggage and aircraft handler Avia was not given the opportunity to reassign the handling tasks.
It was not until Wednesday that strikes by employees of the airport company, ground handling services and aviation security in Berlin halted passenger traffic at BER Airport. Verdi wanted to increase the pressure on employers there for the next negotiations.
