The ajax Amsterdam last night took the “painful but necessary decision” to sack the coach Alfred Schreuder after a 1-1 draw at home to lowly Volendam in the Eredivisie.
At the end of this poor performance, the reigning champions are in fifth place in the standings, seven points behind their rivals Feyenoord, the Rotterdam club ranked first in the Dutch championship.
“It was a painful but necessary decision. Apart from a good start to the season, we lost a lot of points unnecessarily,” Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar told the club’s website.
“We gave Alfred time and confidence to turn things around, but it became clear to us that he couldn’t turn things around,” he added.
In the Eredivisie, Ajax has not won since October 22 when the team was knocked out of the European competition at the Champions League group stage. Alfred Schreuder joined Ajax from Club Brugge last summer to replace Erik ten Hag who left for Manchester United.
In defense of the coach, Ajax has gone through a period of transition after a turbulent summer transfer market in which the club sold players for around 200 million euros and strengthened by more than half.
