In 2022, the federal government received 96 million euros from the digital tax. The tax introduced in 2020 raised almost as much as the advertising tax (98 million euros), the Ministry of Finance announced on Monday. The digital tax is aimed at advertising on the internet (e.g. banner or search engine ads) that is not covered by the advertising tax. The digital tax must generate 120 million euros by 2023, the ministry estimates.
Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) sees this as confirmation that the introduction of the digital tax was correct. “Because the current international tax system does not sufficiently take into account current developments, especially in the field of the digital economy. It is based on physical presence, while companies with new digital business models often realize high added value in a market,” says Brunner. They want to continue working on the introduction of an international digital tax.
In the first year of 2020, 43 million euros were collected from the digital tax in Austria, in 2021 this was already 80 million euros. The proceeds from the tax feed the “Fund to promote digital transformation” (promoting the digitization of the media). Funding is regularly endowed with 20 million euros per year.
The digital tax should be paid by companies that “provide online advertising services for a fee” and “achieve a global turnover of at least 750 million euros and a domestic turnover of at least 25 million euros within one financial year,” according to the ministry. release. Five percent is levied on the fee that the customer pays for online advertising.
