Mohamad Asim, spokesman for Lady Reading Hospital, explained in statements to Pakistani newspaper ‘Dawn’ that several of the injured are in critical condition, so it cannot be ruled out that the number of deaths will increase in the coming hours.

Following the attack, the provincial health ministry declared a “medical emergency” and asked all health workers to remain alert to assist the large number of victims.

For his part, the Inspector General of the Islamabad Police, Akbar Nasir Jan, has put the capital on “highest security alert” following the attack, as specified by the Islamabad Police via his account on the social network Twitter.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Jan has strongly condemned the attack and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. “It is imperative to improve our intelligence-gathering capabilities and adequately equip our police forces to combat the growing threat of terrorism,” he said.
