A tragedy occurred at a baptism in northeastern Mexico on Sunday. Suddenly, the roof of the church where the celebration took place collapsed, burying dozens of people. At least nine people were killed.
Television showed security forces, worshipers and residents trying to rescue survivors. According to local media, another 40 people were injured and 30 people were reportedly trapped under the rubble. Authorities said the rescue operation involved soldiers, police officers, firefighters, rescue dogs and paramedics.
Bishop: “We pray for the survivors”
“We are experiencing a very difficult day. Efforts are currently underway to recover survivors buried under the rubble,” Tampico Bishop José Armando Álvarez Cano said in a video message. “We pray for them.”
The accident occurred in the city of Ciudad Madero on the Gulf of Mexico. According to local police, there were about 100 people in the church building at the time of the accident.
