Prison Violence – JA Jakomini: Prisoner Threw TV at Officials

Date:

“The inmates are becoming more and more aggressive,” the guards union sounds the alarm again. Last week, another argument escalated in the Graz-Jakomini prison: an inmate threw a television at a guard.

A vivid example of the increasingly rough daily life of the Styrian prison guards – we have reported – is a recent incident in the Graz-Jakomini prison: As the “Krone” learned, there was another wild scuffle last week, in which a guard got injured.

TV taken away: prisoner in panic
During a routine cell check while the inmates were in the shower, the officers discovered that the seal on one of the televisions was damaged – inmates kept hiding prohibited items in the television sets. When a prisoner came out of the shower room and saw “his” television being carried away, he panicked completely. Attempts to calm him down were ineffective: The 21-year-old snatched the television from a guard, threw it at another officer, and lashed out. The rioters could only be overwhelmed by alarmed reinforcements.

Incidents pile up
According to the prison guards union, such incidents are on the rise: “Inmates are becoming more and more aggressive, but our demands have not been heeded for years. We urgently need an evaluation of the existing security cells in Jakomini prison. That would be a huge relief when working with prison disruptors,” emphasize Rudolf Wendlandt and Mario Raudner of the prison guards’ union.
