While Europe moans under a heat wave, South America, where winter is currently, is struggling with an extreme cold wave. Several homeless people are said to have been killed in Argentina.
According to the National Weather Service, the thermometer fell on Wednesday to minus 1.9 degrees Celsius in Sunrise in the capital Buenos Aires. This was the lowest value in 34 years. According to the Proyecto 7 organization, nine homeless people died in the past ten days from the consequences of the cold. This number was not confirmed by the authorities.
Snow on the beach of Miramar
The cold wave has been strengthened since the beginning of the week. In the 25 kilometers from Buenos Aires, El Palomar was measured at least 7.4 degrees, a record for 58 years and the second lowest temperature since 1935. Atlantic beaches – such as Miramar’s beach 450 kilometers from Buenos Aires – were covered with snow at the start of the week. This has not taken place in the last twelve years.
The lowest temperatures were measured in the small Patagonian village of Maxinchao. Here the temperatures have been between minus twelve and minus 18 degrees since Monday. However, the record of minus 35 degrees from 1991 was not reached.
