In Austria, 390,059 people were unemployed at the end of January. This brought the unemployment rate to 7.6 percent – the lowest level since 2008. A year ago it was 8 percent at the end of January and two years ago it was 11.4 percent.
Of the 390,059 unemployed, 317,131 were looking for a job and 72,928 were training from the Public Employment Service (AMS), the Ministry of Labor reported on Wednesday.
At the end of January, 1,214 people had been pre-registered for short-time work. At the end of January 2022, there were still 150,230 people on short-time work. Due to the good situation on the labor market and the many vacancies throughout Austria, short-time work is currently only applied very selectively.
“We have already seen from the second quarter of 2022 that the labor market has remained robust despite several crises,” said Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) in a broadcast. “This trend will continue into early 2023 and we continue to see positive developments in the labor market.”
