Because MAN, the former owner, is increasingly withdrawing and new projects still need time, Steyr Automotive is tightening its belt. The reduction in shifts reduces the need for personnel, which is where the social plan comes into play. There is also a bonus for those who want a divorce.
The first concept vehicles and design studies of e-vans and e-buses were shown at last year’s International Motor Show; series production is in the starting blocks for the Swedish brand Volta Trucks; With MAN, the former factory owner is now even counting on the Upper Austrians until the end of September – those responsible at Steyr Automotive throw all this into the race as “sedative pills”.
But behind the scenes, the situation is tense. There is currently talk of downsizing the site, which will cost up to 300 jobs. Company spokeswoman Birgit Pfefferl confirms a “personnel adjustment amounting to about 100 employees,” which she said was carried out by bringing forward already established social plan exits.
Extra free time for people who want to get a divorce
The withdrawal of MAN, which is transferring truck production to Poland, is becoming increasingly noticeable. In some areas, a switch is being made from two shifts to one shifts, partly as a result of which the need for personnel is falling. The “Krone” taught that those who are willing to divorce are rewarded with extra time off – you can stay home up to 19 days early. Currently, approximately 1,900 employees work at the factory, including lease personnel and apprentices.
Due to the war and the sanctions against Russia, the planned cooperation of Steyr Automotive owner Sigi Wolf with the Russian GAZ group was stopped.
