Cepsa promotes the first green hydrogen maritime corridor to the Netherlands

The energy company joins ACE Terminal to develop this initiative for direct use as a fuel in maritime transport

Cepsa and ACE Terminal have signed a Memorandum of Understanding whereby the Spanish energy company will supply green ammonia to the planned import terminal in the port of Rotterdam (Netherlands), for industrial end use after the ammonia has been converted back to green hydrogen, or for direct use as a renewable fuel for the maritime sector and other industries in North West Europe.

Cepsa is developing a 2 GW green hydrogen capacity in its two Energy Parks in Andalusia, as part of its 2030 strategy, ‘Positive Motion’, to become a leader in sustainable mobility and production of renewable hydrogen and biofuels of the second generation, and thus set the benchmark in the energy transition. The two hydrogen plants, representing an investment of 3,000 million euros, will become part of Andalusia’s Green Hydrogen Valley, the largest green hydrogen hub in Europe, for which Cepsa has recently signed several cooperation agreements across the supply chain.

Gasunie, HES International and Vopak are working together on the development of the ACE terminal, as a gateway to the Netherlands for green ammonia as a vector for renewable hydrogen and as a sustainable raw material. The open access terminal will be located in the port of Rotterdam, a crucial logistics infrastructure for Northwest Europe from an energy point of view. With the planned reuse of assets and infrastructure, ACE Terminal is a short-term commercialization project. The agreement with Cepsa is the first that ACE has reached for the import of green hydrogen and ammonia.

The agreement announced today between Cepsa and ACE Terminal marks the start of a collaboration that aims to reach a binding commercial agreement that will facilitate the maritime transport of green ammonia, redistribute green ammonia to the end markets of the Port of Rotterdam’s area of ​​influence and convert green ammonia into green hydrogen for use by customers in Northwest Europe. The location of the ACE terminal in the Port of Rotterdam offers a direct connection to the industry of Rotterdam and the planned national hydrogen network, and also has an excellent connection to the infrastructures towards North-West Europe, connected to the industries from Germany via a hydroduct , Belgium and Denmark.

With green energy imports, which Cepsa can produce competitively in southern Spain thanks to the abundance of sun, wind, land availability, a solid electricity network and access to ports with high maritime traffic, the alliance contributes to decarbonisation of industry and transport in the north of the continent and to ensure energy independence and security of supply in Europe.

The alliance with ACE Terminal is the first tangible step in the agreement that Cepsa signed with the Port of Rotterdam Authority last October to export the hydrogen produced at its San Roque Energy Park via vectors such as ammonia, creating the first green hydrogen corridor between southern and northern -Europe and guaranteeing a supply chain of this sustainable energy between two of the most important European ports, Rotterdam and Algeciras.

Cepsa’s goal is to start the first export of green hydrogen from Spain in 2027, a schedule that coincides with that of the ACE terminal project.
