A huge military machine caused a stir on Monday morning, first over the Tyrolean capital and then at Innsbruck airport. The aircraft, which is otherwise rarely found in Europe, was one of the Chinese Air Force, which brought soldiers to Tyrol for the “Mountain Fighter World Championships” that are about to begin.
According to the Austrian aviation magazine “Austrian Wings”, the machine was a Chinese military transporter type Xian Y-20A. Shortly before 9 a.m., the plane, which is otherwise “hardly to be found in Europe”, landed at Innsbruck airport.
A premiere in Tyrol! The machine first landed in Austria as part of Airpower 2022.
Mountaineering World Championships
On board the machine were Chinese soldiers participating in the “Edelweiss Raid” – the unofficial world championship of mountain troops – in Tyrol. This starts on March 1.
“China is participating in the Edelweiss Raid for the first time with three teams. This week, the teams are preparing for the Edelweiss Raid at the Lizum military training ground,” the organizers say.
