In Austria there was a large increase in the sale of clothing, shoes and sporting goods. Things didn’t look so good in other areas.
“Even though we finally had no more lockdowns last year, 2022 was anything but a normal year,” summarizes trade manager Andrea Gottweis. The retail sector suffered from consumer reluctance. In addition, there were huge cost increases.
„sign of normalization“
Nevertheless, the balance is satisfactory: “The signs are currently pointing to normalization,” says Gottweis. Tourism is up and running, there is a demand for culture and events. “The desire for social life – the urge to live – is awakening again,” says the trade chairman. For example, retail sales in Austria rose by 11.8 percent last year and in Burgenland by as much as 12.6 percent.
With 19 percent, the clothing trade achieved the highest turnover increase compared to 2021, followed by the shoe trade (+10.4 percent) and the sporting goods trade (+5.9 percent). On the other hand, there was a downside in furniture (-6.2 percent), electronics (-4.7 percent) and magazines (-3.7 percent).
