Plans leaked: – Berlin bans sharing of Huawei & ZTE in 5G network

Date:

According to reports, the German federal government wants to ban the use of certain components from Chinese manufacturers in the expansion of the 5G mobile network. Mobile phone companies should be banned from installing certain controls from Chinese manufacturers Huawei and ZTE.

According to media reports, the ban should also cover components already installed by the suppliers – which would force the companies to switch.

US accuses Huawei of espionage
Huawei is one of the world’s largest suppliers of telecommunications equipment and a leader in 5G technology. However, several countries, including the US and UK, have banned the carrier from rolling out their 5G networks over concerns that Huawei technology could be a gateway for Chinese espionage or sabotage.

Politicians from the SPD and Union called for stricter testing of the Chinese network suppliers involved in the construction of the 5G network in Germany. “Given the changed security situation, we cannot tolerate hardware from manufacturers that are not fully reliable in the core networks,” SPD digital politician Jens Zimmermann told Handelsblatt.

Foreign CDU politician Norbert Röttgen (CDU) said: “If it is true that the Interior Ministry is finally starting to ban 5G components from unreliable providers, then that would be good news. Huawei and other providers under the influence of the Chinese government pose a security risk to our networks.”

No evidence of backdoors found
According to information from Zeit Online, during the testing process of the Federal Bureau of Information Security (BSI) and the Federal Ministry of the Interior, no technical evidence was found that “back doors were installed in the components of Chinese manufacturers”.

According to Zeit Online, there is a risk in government circles that the installation of such components in places for controlling the networks would lead to too one-sided dependencies.
