According to Syrian media reports, Aleppo’s international airport, where many humanitarian supplies land after the strong earthquake in early February, has been out of use due to a nighttime airstrike. The runway would have been destroyed. It is suspected that it was an Israeli airstrike.
At 02:07 (local time), Syrian air defenses intercepted missiles fired from the Mediterranean Sea, west of the coastal town of Latakia, the state news agency Sana said, citing a source in the ranks of the Syrian army.
The Syrian transport ministry told AFP news agency that all aid shipments will be diverted to the capital Damascus and Latakia until further notice. Dozens of aid flights have landed in Aleppo since the February 6 earthquake that hit southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria, reportedly killing more than 50,000 people.
A month after the earthquake hit the region, the situation in northwestern Syria is still dramatic, said the head of operations for the aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF). “It is still chaotic. We are still in the phase of chasing needs,” Yasser Kamalidin, head of MSF’s mission in Syria, said over the weekend. The current aid for those affected is “completely disproportionate to the local needs,” Kamalidin continued.
Israel wants to prevent Iran’s permanent presence
As usual, Israel has not commented on the Syrian government’s allegations. The country is very alert to the increased Iranian influence in Syria. Along with Russia, Iran is the main ally of the Syrian leadership, which has been trying for more than eight years to quell an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.
Israel wants to prevent Iran from establishing a permanent military presence in Syria. In the past year, Israel has intensified its attacks on Syrian airports to disrupt Tehran’s increasing use of air routes to ship weapons to allies in Syria and Lebanon, including Hezbollah.
