On Wednesday, Google employees protested in Zurich against the global layoffs of the American internet company: according to trade union Syndicom, about 400 to 500 people took part in a so-called “walkout” at 11 a.m.
In January, Google announced that it wanted to cut jobs worldwide. This step has now become concrete for the Zurich location: “The employees whose roles have been affected have been informed”, Google confirms on request to a report from SRF on Wednesday.
The company declined to comment on the exact number of reports in Zurich. Syndicom speaks of about five percent, which would correspond to 250 people with 5,000 employees.
With Wednesday’s ‘strike’, the participating Google employees would have shown solidarity with the fired, the union writes in a statement. Together with the employee representatives, she is now in talks with Google “to negotiate a comprehensive social plan”. It is also important to reduce the number of those affected.
