At AWS and Twitch – Amazon is now laying off another 9,000 employees

Date:

At Amazon, another 9,000 employees would lose their jobs. Company boss Andy Jassy announced the second wave of job cuts in an email to employees on Monday.

At the start of the year, the world’s largest online retailer had already cut 18,000 of its then more than 1.5 million jobs. This time, employees of the AWS cloud division and the live streaming service Twitch, among others, would have been affected, Jassy writes in American media.

The tech giants had also expanded their workforce significantly with the uptick in business in the corona pandemic. For example, the number of full-time and part-time employees at Amazon doubled from 800,000 at the end of 2019 to more than 1.6 million at the end of 2021.

Last week, the Facebook group Meta became the first of the online giants to trigger a second round of job cuts. After 11,000 jobs in November, some 10,000 jobs now have to be cut and 5,000 vacancies remain unfilled.
