More than seven years ago, the US Environmental Protection Agency discovered the emissions scandal at VW, sparking a tidal wave of lawsuits at various levels. Austrian customers have so far waited in vain for compensation. Now a ruling by the Court of Justice against Mercedes can speed up the whole case.
VW had to pay around 16 billion euros to numerous American customers in 2016 because of the emissions scandal, and ten more were added over the years. And customers in Spain, Germany and the Netherlands were already compensated in 2021. For example, the Commercial Court in Amsterdam stipulated 3,000 euros for buyers of new cars and 1,500 euros for buyers of used cars. “The German Federation of Consumer Organizations made peace with VW two years ago,” said Peter Kolba of the Consumer Protection Association. Only in Austria is VW hesitant to compensate for the damage caused by the emissions scandal.
