Statutory indexation would make the car and truck toll much more expensive in the coming year. It remains to be seen whether domestic politics will intervene. Last year, Asfinag earned no less than 851 million euros.
The use of highways and highways is likely to become significantly more expensive in 2024. Unless politicians intervene and suspend or reduce annual indexation, tolls will rise by 8.6 percent. This corresponds to the underlying inflation in 2022.
This not only affects car and motorcyclists, who then have to pay just under 105 or 42 euros for an annual vignette, but also transport by truck.
Even though Asfinag faces higher costs in some cases, an increase of 8.6 percent is difficult to justify. But the highway authority probably wouldn’t mind if revenues rose so suddenly.
Asphinag last year with a strong surplus
Already in 2022, profits rose to 851 million euros – the second best value ever – thanks to record revenues from car tolls. More than 1.1 billion euros were invested. The Republic received a total of 525 million euros.
However, the ÖAMTC drivers’ club demands that the state relinquish its share of the profit (235 million euros) and rather use the money to reduce Asfinag’s debt (currently 10.46 billion euros).
