When it comes to economical processors for smartphones, tablets or smart home technology, you can’t ignore the chip designer ARM from Great Britain. His designs are the basis of almost all mobile devices: ARM chips can be found in Apple’s iPhones, iPads and Macbooks, as well as in Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones, Nintendo’s Switch console and most smart TVs. But that could change. ARM is getting too powerful for its customers…
British chip designer ARM, whose takeover by American chip company Nvidia failed in 2022 due to resistance from antitrust authorities, must become more profitable according to the wishes of its Japanese owner Softbank – and is therefore preparing its IPO, as it was announced over the weekend. That should bring eight to ten billion dollars into the company’s coffers. ARM wants to use the money to enter a new business field in which the company could endanger its own customers in the future. There is a chip war looming.
