Despite inflation, 78 percent of Austrians are planning summer vacations

Date:

Although many Austrians are currently saving, few want to miss the summer holidays. According to a new ÖAMTC survey, 78 percent plan to drive away at least once. Desired destinations are on the Mediterranean Sea, Austria loses something.

The share is slightly lower than last year, but remains surprisingly high given the noticeable increase in prices for hotels, airline tickets, etc. Probably due to inflation, the expenditure per person will even rise from the latest average of € 1,032 to € 1,070.

“However, 36 percent adjust their travel behavior, switch to the low season, opt for cheaper accommodations or destinations or stay within Austria,” summarizes ÖAMTC travel specialist Yvette Polasek. However, 43 percent are sticking to their plans regardless of inflation (see chart above). 22 percent say they have even more budget for holidays than last year, 22 percent also have less, the majority about the same amount.

Sustainability while traveling is important to a third of holidaymakers
Families with children pay the most attention to money, they spend about € 260 less per capita. They prefer to travel by car, which is why the classic destinations of Italy (which has lost something) and Croatia are particularly popular, and Germany is likely to replace Greece as number three, according to the study. 42 percent of those surveyed want to stay in Austria, which is less than in 2022. Styria is preferred to Carinthia and Salzburg. More than a third of those who want to travel have already arranged their accommodation, only 14 percent are waiting for “last-minute bargains”. About a third of holidaymakers find sustainability important when it comes to travel and the hotel.
