The high food prices, which are currently causing a stir in politics, have been noticed for months by 95.4 percent of domestic customers – and they are reacting accordingly.
They compare prices, increasingly buy discount and promotional items and use food-saving apps (for example Too good to go) to buy cheaper. According to a survey among market agents, regional and organic products are still being bought.
Two-thirds indicate that the price increase is strongest for fruit and vegetables, followed closely by bread and pastries and dairy products. The increase in spending is less noticeable for drinks, snacks and sweets, as well as for convenience products.
Trade demands more honesty from politics
The industry finds it extremely unfair that the food trade is being denounced as the sole cause of inflation. In a call, in which Rewe, Spar, Hofer, Lidl, MPreis and 1,600 retailers participated, politicians called for honesty. The entire value chain needs to be scrutinized closely. Trade is not a profiteer, but a look at the balance sheets is enough.
