Labor shortage – Skilled labor barometer should reflect the labor market

Date:

According to local companies, there were 228,300 vacancies in the first quarter of 2023, compared to 227,700 a year ago. Of the vacancies, 134,700 are in the services sector, 61,100 in the manufacturing sector and 32,500 in the public sector. A trained labor barometer should provide a better overview in the future.

Statistics Austria announced on Tuesday that only 118,100 of the job openings have been reported to the Public Employment Service (AMS). To better respond to the labor shortage, the Ministry of Labor and Economic Affairs has now developed the BMAW AMS Skilled Labor Barometer together with the AMS. This shows current quarterly results on the shortage of skilled labor at occupational level for Austria and in the future also for the individual Länder.

The barometer is calculated using three sub-indicators: job rush (calculated on the basis of unemployed divided by vacancies), access to vacancies (number of inflows and relative change in access to vacancies) and total labor market (number and relative change in inflow into jobs) . ads).

“React faster” in the future
Minister of Labor and Economy Martin Kocher (ÖVP) said on Tuesday that he is confident that the barometer for skilled labor will help to identify developments in the labor market earlier in order to respond to them even faster. And AMS boss Johannes Kopf added: “The advantage of the new skilled worker barometer is that it not only takes as a basis the jobs reported to the AMS, but also that it can respond more quickly to changes in demand.”
