Change imaginable – more than one in three feel stressed at work

Date:

36 percent of employees in Austria feel stressed in their jobs. This increases the willingness to switch to another company, as the report “State of the Global Workplace 2023” now shows.

122,416 employees in 145 countries worldwide were questioned about this. In Austria, slightly more than every third person feels stressed at work. Internationally, this is still a relatively low value: in Europe this averages 39 percent, in Germany 42 percent and worldwide 44 percent feel stressed in their work. “In the long run, stress is poison for corporate culture and therefore for economic success,” said Gallup CEO Marco Nink.

For example, stress is often associated with low emotional attachment to the employer. According to the survey, only eleven percent in Germany are emotionally tied to their employer. This value is higher worldwide (23 percent), the European average is at least two percentage points higher than that in Austria. Nearly eight in ten employees in Germany stated that they worked to rule, more than one in ten people (13 percent) had already given notice internally.

problem in leadership culture
“Cultural factors” are often cited as a reason for low levels of emotional attachment among workers in Europe. “However, the problem is not in the work culture, but in the management culture. Our experience shows that in companies that actively work on the quality of the experienced leadership and the working environment, the emotional bond between their employees can be significantly increased,” says Nink van Gallup.

This is important, among other things, because employees are more likely to change companies if they feel less emotionally connected. In addition, many employees are currently convinced that they have good chances of finding a new job. In Austria, every second person thinks it’s a good time to change employers.

“When employers actively encourage emotional connection and care for the well-being of their employees, they not only reduce their stress, but also strengthen their own competitiveness and employer brand in addition to health and performance,” says Gallup partner Pa Sinya. In other words, with good leadership, employees feel less stressed and more engaged than employees whose emotional needs are overlooked in the workplace.
