The two bedrooms are fully furnished: books with bedtime stories are ready, the beds are made. “Some children have already brought cuddly toys,” reveals vivo boss Regina Pernsteiner during a tour of the new Voestalpine children’s world in Linz, which will offer 24-hour care from September.
Hand in the offspring for the night shift and don’t pick them up until you’ve had a good night’s sleep: the steel company is helping shift workers with this initiative. Are other companies already considering offering childcare 365 days a year, 24 hours a day? No!
Fiber producer Lenzing, plastics processor Greiner, intralogistics specialist TGW, aircraft supplier FACC and plant manufacturer Fill are currently doing it with offers that are open from Monday to Friday. “Until now we haven’t even had afternoon care”, Andreas Fill reveals, “to our own surprise”.
“No Specific Project”
Like Berglandmilch and efko, Polytec refuses to offer company shelter. “We are continuing to talk to our works council, but there is no concrete project yet,” reveals boss Klaus Hraby.
BMW Steyr also does not have a corporate kindergarten, but is currently exploring the possibility of implementing one. For this exam phase, the city of Steyr and other legal entities were brought on board. Heads are also spinning at B&R. “We are currently assessing the need. From the current perspective, 24-hour support is not planned,” says the automation expert in Eggelsberg.
