If you go on a summer trip by car this year, you should get out much cheaper than last year. Prices for diesel and petrol were about 50 cents below the level of the same month last year in June. That is about 25 euros less per 50 liters of tank filling.
As the ÖAMTC announced on Wednesday, the price for diesel in June was 1,507 euros per litre. With petrol that was 1,569 euros. The price per liter was about 50 cents lower than a year ago. Without the extra CO₂ pricing that has been in effect since October 2022, that would be around 60 cents.
The ÖAMTC advises anyone who wants to travel to Italy or Germany in the coming weeks to refuel in Austria. A stop at Croatian gas stations, on the other hand, is worth it. Here, premium petrol costs an average of 1,455 euros and diesel 1,458 euros per litre. In Slovenia, prices are currently even cheaper. Super is offered there for 1,437 euros, for diesel it is 1,474 euros per litre.
Do not refuel along highways
To save money, the ÖAMTC also recommends not to refuel along highways and to compare prices. After all, the difference between the most expensive and the cheapest gas stations is more than 60 cents per litre. Other tips are checking the tire pressure, because a tire pressure that is too low means a higher fuel consumption, and a driving style that is as constant as possible for the future. Both acceleration and unnecessary shifting should be avoided. Unnecessary loads would also increase fuel consumption, it said.
