In the long-running dispute over a collective bargaining agreement with the American online giant Amazon, the Verdi union is calling on workers at various locations in Germany to strike from Tuesday to Thursday. Amazon has repeatedly raised hourly wages and is now above the current minimum wage, strike leader Monika Di Silvestre said on Tuesday. “However, management would never have done that voluntarily without the pressure of the strikes.”
In fact, employees’ incomes often remained several hundred euros lower than those of employees in companies with collective agreements due to longer working hours and low or no special benefits such as Christmas and holiday bonuses. The reason for the strike is the “Prime Day” bargain day, organized by Amazon. The central strike day at all locations is Tuesday.
The dispute has been going on for 10 years
The conflict at Amazon in Germany has been going on since 2013. Amazon was relaxed. “There have never been any restrictions due to strike activity and we do not expect any this time,” said a spokesman for the group. Amazon offers competitive wages.
Workers in all German Amazon shipping centers are called on to strike. Workers at individual locations had already started striking on Sunday.
