The telecom sector in Austria continues to flourish. Last year, at 9381 petabytes, 10 percent more data was used than in 2021. Domestic providers also recorded a turnover increase of 3.1 percent to almost 4.55 billion euros, RTR reports based on market data for 2022 published on Thursday. of which 94 percent on mobile phones. The importance of the fixed telephone is declining sharply.
“The Austrian telecommunications sector was in good health in 2022,” said Klaus Steinmaurer, CEO of RTR for telecommunications and post. Investments also rose sharply in 2022 compared to the previous year, namely by 14.5 percent to no less than 862 million euros. “Users in Austria are benefiting from the investment activity and can look forward to continuous improvements in network infrastructure, service and product quality,” said RTR, the official representative of the broadcasting and telecom regulation company RTR.
A1, magenta and three dominate the market
In the ranking of market shares in Austria, the three major mobile communications providers were undisputedly in first, second and third place at the end of 2022. At the end of 2022, A1 had a market share of 38.2 percent, followed by magenta with a share of 25.3 and three with a share of 21.9 percent. Several smaller providers now have a combined market share of nearly 15 percent, with HOT accounting for 8.7 percent and Mass Response (Spusu) for 3.8 percent.

Users in Austria benefited from the investment activity, Steinmaurer writes in the foreword to the annual report. There is a “continuous improvement of network infrastructure, service and product quality”. This shows that the “competition consistently shows positive effects”. The scheme stimulates the competitive environment and benefits market participants.
The number of fixed connections is declining
The annual report shows that the fixed telephone has been steadily decreasing in importance for years. Last year there were no less than 2.16 million connections, 95,000 less than in 2021. According to RTR, the decrease in 2022 was greater than ever.
But in general, the 26,477 million call minutes show a decrease towards the pre-corona level. The decrease compared to 2021 amounts to a total of 5.8 percent. In the fixed network there was a minus of 11.1 percent to 1550 million minutes, in mobile it was a minus of 5.5 percent to 24,928 million minutes.
