After just over a year, the Italian chocolate manufacturer Ferrero stopped production at its factory in Arlon, Belgium, because of salmonella. “The entire production has been shut down,” said a spokeswoman for the confectionery manufacturer on Thursday. The bacteria was discovered there at the end of June. Parts of the Kinder chocolate products from the same factory were affected by salmonella contamination last year.
Ferrero’s spokeswoman stressed that the plant was “not closed” and that workers’ salaries were “one hundred percent covered”. The cleaning takes about two weeks. The company described the halt in production as a purely precautionary measure and stressed that no end product had tested positive for salmonella.
Production will stop as early as April 2022
In April 2022, Ferrero had to recall certain children’s products due to suspected salmonella, including surprise eggs, chocolate bonbons and mini eggs. Arlon in the Belgian Ardennes is an important location for the confectionery manufacturer, which is known worldwide for the Kinder and Nutella brands, among others.
Salmonella can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps and is one of the most common foodborne infections. Babies, small children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may be susceptible to a more serious course of disease.
