Many brands affected – millions of diesel cars are now threatened with extinction

Date:

In extreme cases, up to 1.6 million domestic diesel cars could be shut down due to unauthorized exhaust shutdown.

As a result of the VW scandal, which involved illegal exhaust software, up to 1.6 million vehicles are now at risk of having their operating license revoked, ie shut down by the authorities. That is what the Chamber of Labor (AK) and consumer lawyer Lydia Ninz suspect.

Not only VW affected
Diesel cars from VW, Mercedes, Opel, BMW and Renault would be affected. The reason is the current judgment of a German court, according to which the “repair” of the software, which has already been carried out by many drivers, is defective. Cars continue to emit too many pollutants. The Court of Justice of the EU has also recently declared that exhaust gas cleaning, which switches itself off at certain temperatures (“thermo window”), may be impermissible.

It is now unclear whether the German verdict will become final. If so, then it would also apply to Austria. As a precaution, Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler must immediately stop further software updates and have the type approvals of the affected cars checked by the EU, the AK demands. Manufacturers should be required to retrofit nitrogen oxide catalysts or pay a fee.
