Stefan Rauter, head of restaurant Francobollo, on the response to an immoral offer in the hospitality industry
Crown: Mr Stefan Rauter, for your Francobollo restaurant in St.Jakob im Rosental advertised a position as a cash worker with a dream compensation of EUR 3200 net for five days or 40 hours. How was the feedback?
Stefan Rauter: I haven’t had that many applicants in 15 years: there were 40 from all over Austria.
Was the right one in between?
Yes, I’ve talked to everyone, filtered out four and got a top man, a Carinthian who previously worked in the Wörthersee area, who does an excellent job. Of the 40, there are others that have proved useful in other areas. I’ve hired a total of five people, but I still need two cooks, a pizza chef and a dishwasher.
What was the response to this exceptionally good industry and in-house offering?
In my company, I discussed this with my people and voluntarily offered everyone a raise. I hope there are no bad vibes. I have already been criticized and sometimes even insulted by my colleagues in the industry, but I can only answer: you can close your eyes – or do something.
Are higher salaries than the prescription against the shortage of skilled labor?
At the moment it is. And it will get even more expensive until balance and predictability go back to the way it was. But you don’t just have to lure people with money, you also have to create a social, humane workplace.
