The turquoise green government is busy negotiating the anti-inflation package. However, it is not yet certain whether it will be completed before the Special Session.
It’s a rare collaboration. Ironically, the SPÖ and FPÖ initiated a special session in the National Council on inflation on Wednesday. The battle between the parties over who has the best concept to fight inflation will end in a harsh verbal exchange of blows. But there will be no effective decision. Unless the government agrees on a package at the last minute, at least negotiations are currently underway. Here’s a rundown of the recipes favored by the parties against inflation.
Greens/ÖVP: The government is negotiating a new anti-inflation package. It is uncertain when an agreement will be reached here. It could be this week or next week. They adhere to the principle that there should be no lid on food. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) wants to start over with energy prices.
NEOS: The pink ones are against new taxes and ceilings. Club deputy president Nikolaus Scherak is calling for a reduction in indirect labor costs and capital gains tax. The NEOS, meanwhile, want to cut labor taxes again and cut indirect labor costs by 6.5 percentage points. This could lead to a five percent increase in net wages.
SPÖ: The Reds want rents to be limited to a maximum of two percent per year by 2025. They also call for suspending VAT on food and capping interest rates on loans.
FPÖ: Blue’s concepts are very similar to those of the SPÖ. The FPÖ also wants to suspend the increase in category and benchmark rents until 2026. The VAT on food, energy and fuel must be lowered or lowered.
