Austria is failing on many measures to help the country achieve climate neutrality by 2040. This is regularly complained about by NGOs and climate researchers. Now for the next bad news: The Renewable Heat Act, which plans to phase out gas heating by 2040 and oil heating by 2035, is being postponed due to further negotiations.
Isn’t there an end to oil and gas heating? ÖVP energy spokeswoman Tanja Graf reported on Monday via “Kurier” that the planned Renewable Heat Act (EWG) had failed. The ÖVP club immediately denied this. “Clearly something has been misunderstood. Negotiations continue,” it said in response to a “Krone” request. The Greens also confirm the ongoing discussions.
In addition to agreement, a two-thirds majority is also required
However, time is of the essence if the law is to be adopted within this legislative period. Not only is an agreement between the coalition required, but also a two-thirds majority in parliament. The election will take place no later than the autumn of 2024!
There are currently still 878,000 gas and 521,000 oil heating systems, each contributing 19 percent to space heat generation. For comparison: Boilers with wood etc. can be found in 734,000 homes.
