According to the German Federal Cartel Office, the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) could increase the dominance of large companies. “The danger is very great because for AI you mainly need two things: powerful servers and tons of data. The large internet companies have both,” said authority head Andreas Mundt in an interview with the Reuters news agency.
“However, models from smaller providers can also become so popular that they develop into a kind of operating system, a new platform. Both developments are possible and as an authority we must ensure that any competitive potential is not lost from the outset.”
Race between Microsoft and Google
Microsoft and Alphabet subsidiary Google are currently competing for technological leadership. But other companies such as Facebook parent Meta or the Chinese online retailer Alibaba are also working feverishly on this technology, which has been making headlines since the introduction of the chatbot ChatGPT. There are also numerous startups working on this topic.
At the same time, governments around the world are struggling to find a legal framework for this technology. The most advanced is the European Union (EU), which launched the ‘AI Act’ in the summer, which the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Member States want to agree on by the end of the year.
