It’s back! Japanese manufacturer Bandai Namco has relaunched the Tamagotchi in a big way this year. The latest generation ‘Uni’ is available in pink and purple including bracelet and costs no less than 79.99 euros without shipping at toy store Smiths. Not only will you care for and care for your digital pet in the usual way, but you will also be offered many new features. This includes – in keeping with the test of time – the Tamaverse, a Tamagotchi metaverse in which fans from all over the world are connected and can play together.

Under the spell of pixels
This was unthinkable in the 1990s. The small, colorful plastic eggs, available for about 200 shillings, had only a few buttons and functions (feeding, playing, petting, cleaning). A chunky pixel graphic and some beeps were enough to completely captivate kids – much to the chagrin of parents and teachers, even during school hours.

It is doubtful whether the umpteenth version of the device, despite many more gaming options, will generate even the same hype among children as it did back then. On the other hand, there is now dissatisfaction among collectors and retro enthusiasts about older gaming devices – and not just when it comes to digital animals.
