Date:

According to Statistics Austria, 247,200 people were looking for work in the third quarter of the year – 11.5 percent more than a year ago. At the same time, the number of employed people in Austria has increased to approximately 4.5 million. More people now work in the service sector.

The increase in this area amounts to 2.6 percent. However, in other sectors, such as agriculture, forestry, industry, trade and construction, the number of people with jobs has decreased. Between July and September, an average of about 4.5 million people aged 15 and over had a job. The share of workers among all people aged 15 to 64 was 78.9 percent for men and 70.9 percent for women.

According to Statistics Austria, 247,200 people were looking for work in the third quarter of 2023. That is 11.5 percent more than a year ago. “The recession is having a noticeable impact on the labor market,” says Tobias Thomas, Managing Director of Statistics Austria. According to the international definition, the number has increased year-on-year for the third time in a row. At the same time, many vacancies were advertised between July and September.

Low-educated people in particular are unemployed
Unemployment rose more among men than among women, and the increase was stronger among foreign citizens than among people from Austria. People who have at most a compulsory education certificate are also disproportionately affected.
