A violent corona wave is currently sweeping through Austria and is causing tens of thousands of sick leave. In view of this “record-level wave” shown by the wastewater analyses, former Health Minister Rudi Anschober (Greens) complains that too little has been learned from Corona.
“Where is our self-protection?”
He is ‘surprised’ that people hardly wear face masks even in very busy public transport, he writes in a blog post on his website. “Where is our health knowledge and our self-protection?” he asks. Given the low vaccination rate against Covid and flu, he will “have to get used to the mask again,” Anschober writes and posted a photo of himself wearing an FFP2 mask on the train.
He sees major challenges for Austria due to the Covid wave. Because the end of the pandemic was only a “perceived” pandemic, Long Covid remains a huge problem and it is “very difficult” to bring production sites for important medicines back to Europe. In any case, he sees a glimmer of hope: there will be a new pandemic law because it will allow us to better prepare for future virus outbreaks.
Scolding corona deniers
Anschober sharply criticizes Corona deniers who would confuse the population with “original ‘facts’”. The former Minister of Health calls for it to be “high time to combat this objectively”. Anschober’s successor as Health Minister, Johannes Rauch (Greens), also recently called for people to wear masks again and get vaccinated. At the same time, Rauch made it clear that there would be no “coercive measures.”
