Georg Dornauer, the outgoing deputy governor of the state of Tyrol, and still SPÖ leader, made his last appearance as a government member in the state parliament on Wednesday morning. He used the last part of his budget speech for parting words, some of which were emotional. “For me, politics is and will remain the most beautiful calling in the world,” Dornauer explained to the plenary and made it clear that he would not say goodbye to it completely: “The rule is: goodbye.”
The 41-year-old hinted at his firm intention to become a member of the state parliament in the future. Wednesday is Dornauer’s last day as the state’s deputy governor. His successor Philip Wohlgemuth will be elected and sworn in to the state parliament on Thursday. Dornauer will then take his place in the rows of representatives. How long was unclear. His party only wants to see him there ‘temporarily’, but he recently made it clear in an APA interview that he views it very differently.
On Wednesday, the former mayor of Sellrain, who has headed the Tyrolean SPÖ since 2019 and led the party back into government in 2022, thanked his government colleagues, especially Governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP). He had a “trust partnership” with him. However, his party friends in the state parliament club received no words of thanks. The club was largely responsible for Dornauer eventually having to resign from his position in the aftermath of the famous hunting case. He wished his successor Wohlgemuth, who was still in the ranks of the representatives, only “all the best” and assured “all support”.
Government meetings will be “missing at first”
He will “never forget” his time as deputy governor of the state; he will especially “miss Tuesday at the beginning” – the day of government meetings “with lunch afterwards”. “There is no shortage of entertainment and entertainment”, Dornauer also said goodbye to the social side of government life with a heavy heart. He “subordinated his entire life and his entire political career to one goal”: to be with the people and serve the Tyroleans. “Here stands someone who fulfilled his office with great love,” Dornauer explained and wished him a “Blessed Christmas” in advance.
Then there was applause from the government bench and the members of the ÖVP and SPÖ. But that wasn’t enough to say goodbye: Dornauer held a balance sheet press conference during lunch (see video above).
