The world’s largest online retailer, Amazon, is conquering new territory. The American group opened its first fashion department store near Los Angeles on Wednesday. Amazon also wants to appeal to customers who want to view and try on their clothes on site after the Corona crisis, instead of ordering them.
At its nearly 2,800-square-foot store in Glendale, California, the group relies heavily on artificial intelligence to help customers choose fashion through personalized recommendations.
In addition, customers who shop through the Amazon app can try on their goods and be informed about the availability of changing rooms. According to Amazon, it offers hundreds of brands at various prices.
New competition for established fashion chains
With the new offering, Amazon will compete directly with fashion chains such as Macy’s and Nordstrom. According to analysts, the online giant has already risen to the top fashion retailer for Walmart in the US, but has so far avoided stationary fashion stores with their own challenges.
Still, Amazon has already gained experience in retail and has been operating smaller supermarkets and bookstores for quite some time. Amazon also owns the American supermarket chain Whole Foods. It is not yet clear whether Amazon plans to open more department stores.
