The Benko block in Vienna’s new building is in danger of becoming a ruin. But the residents do not want to accept that.
This stinks to high heaven. We are not talking about the financial juggler’s business here, but about the construction site around the concrete block on Vienna’s Mariahilfer Strasse. Ever since the plans for Benko’s chic department store were announced, there has been criticism – and the residents in particular have to suffer from a monstrous construction site.
First demolition work, then roadblocks and construction containers in front of the front door and the constant uncertainty as to whether the building might not be built too high. Since Signa’s bankruptcy, work has come to a standstill.
What now next with the project? The districts and city hope for a decision soon. The residents could again be left out.
Toilet container in front of the front door
For them, the construction site is a daily nuisance. The residents of Karl-Schweighofer-Gasse are particularly affected. The company has set up camp here.
Andreas L. describes: “Right in front of our front door are the construction containers including toilets for the workers. Cleaning the street? No. Every now and then the workers cleaned up after themselves. As a resident, you are not even allowed to drive inside, even if you have to transport something.”
Is there a threat of a ghost construction site?
Construction was originally slated to be completed in 2024. Now the entire project could become a ghost construction site. “This cannot remain a permanent situation. The containers have to go,” the residents said.
